Are Millennials The Worst Generation Ever?

Millennials on the move!

Millennials on the move!

Are we, Millennials, really the worst generation ever? That clip from “The Newsroom” is always making the rounds on Facebook and the character’s stats are all accurate within a point or two- fact checked it myself a while ago. But is he right about us?

Cause Millennials weren’t the ones who covered the environment with pollution and greenhouse gases that now threaten our way of life and our very existence. But remember that time Millennials spilled a bunch of oil in the Gulf of Mexico? Or how about that time we funded the shit out of climate change deniers and their interests? No! You fucking don’t because that was one of the other idiot generations. Which is partly understandable since previous generation were pretty fucking stupid. Well, ignorant at least, because they simply didn’t know what we know now. But that’s no excuse to keep practicing the same dated techniques and espousing the same archaic rhetoric. Previous generations also fucked up the economy so bad it’s impact reverberated around the entire goddamn world. They were, and some still are, pretty racist too. And homophobic.

Given the same circumstances and limited knowledge of the dark ages whose to say our generation wouldn’t have made the same greedy, irresponsible, and destructive decisions? Doesn’t really matter though because what’s done is done and we had nothing to do with, but we are the ones picking up the tab and cleaning up these catastrofucks.

But we have our own problems too! Like staring at our phones all the time. That’s as bad as the racism thing, right? No? Yeah, not quite. Well, we’re always online wasting time and our politics extend only as far as our Facebook posts reach. We don’t make a lot of money either and maybe still live at home because we’re so fucking lazy. We also only give a shit about a cause for a week tops, then something else happens and we forget all about that last shooting. We have only surface, superficial knowledge of the issues facing contemporary society too.

Nah, just kidding. Some of that’s true, and some it may be more true for others. But remember Occupy? The Arab Spring? Or what about the Black Lives Matter movement? Yeah? Cause that was fucking us being on our phones. Remember when Obama got elected? And reelected? That may have largely been millennials voting for the first time. And the money thing? Well, we all know who trashed the economy and refuses to share profits with employees who make those profits possible. As for the issues and superficial knowledge, we’re doping the best we can with the literally constant stream of news! Current generations will know more than some of the previous generations combined! It’s no wonder it can be tough to stay informed.

Certainly all generations have done stupid shit and we’ll certainly have our turn at that, we just haven’t had enough time to fuck things up as much as the Baby Boomers yet. Here’s the thing though, we are learning from your mistakes, Boomers! We are growing in number while yours shrink because you’re all old and dying! So get used to our liberal values and tolerance towards others. And we’re gonna vote the shit out of you next election!

Ancient Aliens: The Truth Is Out There, But Some Of It’s Down Here

Anasazi Petroglyphs AZThe much ridiculed “Ancient Astronauts” hypothesis -I refuse to call it a theory, because, well, those of you who know the difference will understand- is a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s exciting to think we may have been, or still are, being visited by extraterrestrials. Imagine if we really have been visited and they’ve interacted with us! However, I find truth to be more exciting, and if it’s not true, then it’s nothing.

I enjoy the show on the History channel. I enjoy it for several reasons, mostly because I like asking questions to myself about the show that they really should have answered. A lot of the “evidence” presented on the show I know is pure bullshit because even a cursory google search, or an introductory class to anthropology, or archaeology will already have the answers to the “unexplainable” “evidence” they present. I don’t think they even know what the evidence means, and if they do, they certainly don’t use it correctly. Too often it’s just a question. And questions are not evidence, they, in fact, require evidence to answer.

The show is also very insulting to our species and our ancient ancestors especially because by using aliens as the explanation for all of the amazing achievements of ancient civilizations it devalues the actual human ingenuity involved. And personally, I find some of the unique ways our ancestors found to solve problems of construction far more satisfying and even more interesting than just “aliens did it.” “Aliens did it” is basically the same as saying “God did it,” and it doesn’t actually answer the questions of how these monuments or advanced mathematics and various other advancements were actually made.

So, as I already mentioned, I knew a lot of it was bullshit. But I watched a documentary “Ancient Aliens Debunked” (link below) which presented an overwhelming amount of new information including how the show just outright lies… a lot. The documentary is a bit long, and I don’t entirely agree with it’s conclusion at the end, but it’s definitely worth watching, even if you just watch certain sections. It’s incredibly informative not just about the lies and errors the show perpetrates, but about ancient peoples, their cultures, their technological prowess, and their construction and engineering techniques.

My biggest problem with show and others like it are the consequences of their lies. They make the idea of visitation seem completely nutty and not worthy of any investigation, or even a second thought. But the hypothesis- which may or may not be testable, possibly making the label of hypothesis incorrect as well- is one worth investigation, as are the mysteries still presented to us by the ancient world. New discoveries are pushing back dates for human culture and advancements almost every year. And the explanations, aliens or not, may rewrite history and I promise you it’ll be very interesting- if you find ancient cultures interesting anyway.

But back to the aliens bit. We already know, even with our limited technology, that interstellar travel is possible, but it would be resource intensive, and take a really long time. So right there, it’s possible aliens could have visited, are visiting, or will visit our world. Now, if there are technologies and energy sources we haven’t harnessed or even dreamt of, imagine what a civilization 100 years, 1,000, years, 1,000,000, years more advanced than us could achieve. All I’m saying is that it’s hypothetically possible for aliens to visit Earth, or for us to visit alien worlds in the future. And if something turned up in an ancient tomb or grave that could truly not be explained, like a star map akin to the one in “Prometheus” or even something more terrestrial like the reports of New World items- cocaine, tobacco, tobacco leaves and even a tobacco beetle- being found in ancient Egyptian mummies, scientists very well may dismiss these finds because of the stigmas associated with “Ancient Aliens.” And leaving these genuine mysteries unsolved and dismissed as unworthy of study is the true tragedy caused by the quest for ratings by ignoring already established facts and outright lying.

Why Both Sides of The Flag Stomping Debate are Bullshit

IMG_0159 2

Flag stomping seems to be all the rage lately and people are either completely against it finding the the practice disgusting and disrespectful, or think they are in the right simply protesting using their freedom of expression.

But both sides are kind of full of bullshit.

Let’s start with the anti-flag stompers. They claim it’s unacceptable and completely disrespectful. Well, yeah, it is very disrespectful since the the flag is the symbol of not only our country and it’s ideals, but also representative of what the men and women who have served in the military have fought to defend. It’s thus understandable why veterans and those who support them get so angry about people walking and stomping on the flag. But here’s the thing: you know what else is disgusting and disrespectful? Sending our men and women to fight and die in endless and needless wars while not giving the support and medical care they need once they return. We’ve let many veterans become homeless which may be a direct result of inadequate healthcare. Instead of giving veterans the resources they need to overcome things like the loss of limbs, post-traumatic stress disorder, or other ills, some are unable to reintegrate back into domestic life. In some ways, it’s surprising there aren’t more veterans walking on the flag. You know what else is disrespectful and disgusting? Discriminatory anti-gay laws; billionaires buying, or at least heavily influencing elections; individual states denying people healthcare by refusing to accept the Affordable Care Act; the legislation that seeks to regulate everything women do with their bodies; systemic racism resulting in numerous deaths; and the list goes on.

There are always people saying “Well, if they hate America so much, they can leave!” They say this regarding people who stomp on the flag, or protest in general. That’s statement is fucking stupid. I don’t know for sure if they hate America, but I don’t think they do. They’re angry about something that’s going on here, and if they truly hated America, why would they want to vocalize the problems they have and try to raise awareness and bring about change? If they hated the country, wouldn’t they want to just let the problems continue until they destroy the country from the inside?

But there’s a problem with walking on the flag as a form of protest. While it clearly sends a message, and while it is a form of free speech that people have fought and died to defend, the main message that’s being heard is a big “fuck you” to the men and women in the military. Despite the fact our country has many failings and hasn’t been doing a great job of living up to the ideals that our flag symbolizes, desecrating the flag turns people off immediately. What are these flag-walkers upset about anyway? I have no i-fucking-dea because their actual message isn’t getting out. People focus on the action rather than the message, because it’s a pretty inflammatory action.

Chances are these protesters are not intending to disrespect our veterans and have some legitimate grievance. They aren’t looking at veterans and thinking, “Hey, fuck you guys!” They might be doing that though, because, like I said, I haven’t seen anything about their actual reasons. It’s an incredibly stupid way to get people on your side.

If you want to stomp on a flag, maybe get a fake one where the stars have been replaced with corporate logos, that’s something more people could probably get behind. But whatever the case, let’s not get so offended over a symbolic action, especially if they really do hate the US, who gives a shit what they think? But people walking on the flag, how about being less offensive and finding a better, more inclusive way to get your message out? It’s really all a bunch of bullshit.

5 Reasons To Not Say The Pledge Of Allegiance

American FlagBefore we get into this I’d like say that, unlike some of my other posts, I intend no disrespect towards anyone here. I believe we can all be proud of our country and it’s accomplishments and at the same time be critical of ourselves and our country, recognizing we still have more to achieve.

Back in middle and high school I’d refuse to say the pledge of allegiance. However, especially on Veteran’s and Memorial Day I’d at least stand out of respect. For me, it wasn’t about being disruptive, cool, or rebelling just to rebel because that’s what teenagers do. I had my reasons and have developed more with time. And in case you forgotten the words since you were in school, here they are – “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Under God

Let’s get this one out of the way right now. It’s probably the most well known and controversial issue concerning the pledge. Those words became added in 1954 and did not appear in the original text. It’s easy enough to just not say those two words “under God,” but in America we have the freedom of religion and worship, or not worship, as we please. The phrase itself is hypocritical to that core American value. People who believe in a different god, or gods, or no god at all. The Constitution reads “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” While the pledge itself is not a law, it is our official pledge passed by Congress and it is in conflict with the essence of the constitutional excerpt above by respecting an establishment of religion- technically many religions which have a single god.

What Republic?

Ideally, our nation is supposed to be a republic- a government where the people elect representatives to… well, represent their ideals and interests. Nearly half of Congress are millionaires. Google “millionaires in congress” and click any of the articles that pop up, or, just go to images for some pie charts! Then if you Google “average income in USA” the information is answered right at the top: $60,528- which is almost a million dollars short of a million dollars. The median income is even less. The US is oft called “The Great Melting Pot,” but Congress is not. Congress has become more diverse both in terms of gender and ethnicity, but it’s still 75% old white males. The average American 39, women make up 50% of the American population, but only 17% of Congress. There’s also a disparity in religious diversity. They are out of touch with the average and majority of Americans in age, income, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, and probably sexual orientation. So, how can these members of Congress be said to truly represent their constituents? There’s a link to a helpful info-graphic at the the bottom.

Indivisibly Divisible

We are a fairly divided nation. Blacks have higher incarceration rates and less access to social mobility than whites. Race divides us. Religion divides us. Political affiliation divides us. Congress get’s along as well two child siblings who both want the remote control and watch their own show. President Obama recently vetoed the Keystone XL pipeline, but it doesn’t matter whether you agree or disagree with that decision. Republicans and Democrats have been giving “facts” that are exactly opposite. There can’t be two versions of a fact. Someone’s lying. According to Congress it would and would not create jobs, it would and would not hurt the environment, it would and would not help make America’s energy needs secure. Turn on the news, or “The Daily Show” and the same is usually true for every other issue from marriage and gender equality to healthcare. Even when they agree, they bicker about syntax. Republicans say ISIS is a threat to America and we need to bomb them. Obama agrees and has done just that with drones. But since he’s not calling the Islamic extremists, he’s not doing enough, despite his reasonable argument that ISIS are just terrorists because they do not represent religion and shouldn’t be given any validity in that regard.

Liberty And Justice In Different Amounts For Different People

I already mentioned the disparity in black and white incarceration rates, but it goes further than that. Remember that big economic crisis in 2008 that was totally avoidable, but happened? Yeah, there are people who are responsible for that. There have been no arrests. But plenty of protesters have been arrested. People get arrested all the time for lame reasons and we have for profit prisons making money off of people committing crimes. Wealthier people enjoy more liberty than less wealthy people, and more (or less) justice depending how you look at it. You ever see a story about a celebrity driving drunk, but nothing really happens? But if you, or I, did the same thing we’d probably loose our license, get a massive fine, and then loose our jobs because we just lost our mode of transportation to work. Do we even have to go over economic inequality, or how super rich people and corporations influence elections? Or how women are paid less than men for the same work? Or how some people can get married and others can’t?

Forgetting The Vets

A Facebook friend posted a political cartoon depicting a classroom with a child refusing to stand for the pledge and a veteran in a wheelchair with the teacher saying she’d like to introduce someone who can’t stand for defending his right to not stand during the pledge. But I don’t think veterans should be standing either because our country is letting them down. They’re treated as somewhat disposable. Remember that Veterans Affairs scandal that happened not too long ago? While going to college I met several Veterans and they had similar stories. They have been getting the run around, cutting through red tape, and waiting seemingly endlessly to receive their benefits. Many vets come home with what we used to call “Shell Shock” now called PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and some of them never receive the proper care. And like George Carlin once said, maybe if we kept the scarier sounding name they’d be getting the care and support they deserve. Others come back with missing limbs, brain damage, and countless other injuries and do not receive enough support to become rehabilitated or keep themselves and their families afloat economically. Statistics vary, but between 25% and 12% of the homeless population are veterans and that’s despicable. There’ll be a link at the bottom for more information which also shows inequality between the ethnicity of veterans and the rates of homelessness.

It’s for these reasons I will not say the pledge of allegiance. I respect and admire those who serve in our armed forces but we have let them down. We have let ourselves down.  We are not living up to the ideals our nation was founded on and too often we’re guilty of doing the exact opposite. If we do say the pledge, we are pledging our allegiance to the flag of a republic which does not exist anymore. The pledge is a lie and until we fix these problems I will not say it. We can all be critical of our nation while still having respect for those who serve and protect us. We can abstain from saying the pledge with false promises and still want those promises to be fulfilled. We may not be everything we want to be as espoused in the pledge, but we can still aspire and work towards that end and we can still love our country in spite of it’s flaws not just because it’s our home, but because even though our society isn’t currently living up to it’s ideals, I believe that most, if not all of us, regardless of race, gender, class, or political affiliation, we want to live up to those ideals in earnest.

Femi-memes

There have been a few feminist memes, femi-memes, out there on the Facebook that I appreciate and at the same time had a small issue with. Two in particular come to mind.

The first one was an edited version of another meme. It said something along the lines of “She’s a: daughter, mother, sister, wife.” It then had a red line through all those and the word “person” written in red on the bottom. I do not have a problem with the message. She’s a person and it shouldn’t matter what else she is, she should simply be treated like anyone else. I think this meme in particular was about sexual assault and harassment, but I’m not sure. It may have just been about inequality in general. For me though, “person” is sort of vague and thus somewhat un-relatable. Though, I’m also a bit of a curmudgeon, a jerk, and maybe a bit anti-social and I don’t really like people. I actually kind of hate people and person could just be some random, faceless, ass hat. Don’t get me wrong, generally, I still think all ass hats deserve freedom, liberty, and the yadi yada- unless they’re a criminal who has undergone due process and been convicted (and actually guilty, of course).

But I liked the first version of it better. Just “She’s a daughter, mother, sister, wife.” While I don’t have children or a wife, I do have a mother and a sister. I’ve also been in love and significant other is akin to wife, and I could image having a daughter. These aren’t just some random “person.” These are people I know and care about and would never think of treating them badly, nor tolerate anyone else treating badly. It hits home, it’s personal now. If you hurt one of these there’s no god powerful enough to keep you safe you wretched bastard! I will find you and lock you up in chains and feed you to rats after covering you in something rats find delicious! Or at least call the cops and maybe out you on social media. One or the other.

The second one was maybe not a meme, but a critical judgement of the memes concerning breast cancer: “Save the Ta-tas” and “Save Second Base.” The objection was that this sexualizes and objectifies women and I agree, it totally does. So valid point. The woman, or women, or people, objecting to this rightly state that they are more than body parts, and battling cancer is not about saving breasts, but saving lives.

The unfortunate truth is sex sells. And I remember when I first heard of this new campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer. I’m pretty sure I was in middle school. Again, it was a more relatable way to spread awareness and one that I remember hearing was aimed at younger people. Middle schoolers, particularly middle school boys, are not particularly passionate about cancer of any kind – unless they know someone with it, then they might be. But you know what middle school boys are fairly passionate about? If you guessed fart jokes you’re right! But also boobs! Boys really like them. And I don’t think that’s so much the objectification of women as sexual objects, so much as the natural inclination of boys wanting to see naked girls. And that inclination stays up till the day a boy becomes a man and that man dies- preferably with a pair of bare breasts in his face.

My point is, whoever came up with this campaign managed to make cancer sexy in a way… that sounds wrong. The topic of cancer being sexy? I’m not sure how to phrase that. But we don’t want to think about the struggle of battling death. We don’t want to be guilt tripped about not donating to a cause like those commercials about starving children, or those Sarah McLachlan animal commercials that we all change the channel when they come on. Someone came up with a way to make cancer cool- again that sounds so wrong, but I have to wonder how much money did these people raise selling T-shirts? And how many lives did that money save? I’m guessing at least some. Sure, it’s kind of a marketing scam and I understand the completely valid objections to the campaign and I agree with them. Unfortunately I don’t have any numbers, and I couldn’t find them on the first page of Google search so they must not exist, but the bottom line is the campaign did raise awareness and got people’s attention. Companies made a lot of money selling T-shirts and at least some of that money went to research which is more than without the campaign.

The objections to these memes are valid and show we as a society and culture have a long way to go towards appreciating women as people. But it’s not going to happen overnight and these two examples are hardly the worst offenders of sexist content. At the very least these two have hopefully done some good.

5 Of The Most Annoying Things We Do On The Internet (And A Few We Do In Real Life)

I couldn’t sleep the other night with lots of thoughts rumbling around in my head. So, I vented. It’s not going to be politically correct and it will be crass.  It might be hypocritical because I know I’ve done some of these things myself, some right in the article. Enjoy!

1. Getting Caught Up In Semantics

Here’s an example. I wrote a status a while back: “I want to change the world.” And someone replied “The world is fine, it’s people that need to change.” And that’s certainly true. The world, a.k.a Earth, is a giant fucking rock that’s been around for about four billion years and will be around for billions more. I didn’t mean I wanted to alter the weather to fit my mood on a particular day. I didn’t mean I wanted to create a new continent with an inland sea dominated by talking apes, nor did I mean I wanted to demolish the Himalayas and construct a new super highway to make traveling that part of the globe easier. I want to change the world and you know what the fuck I mean. I want to change the way we do things, make the environment more healthy for us and all living beings, bring more peace and prosperity to the world’s populace. Stuff like that, so get off your high fucking horse you goddamn psuedo-intellect. Good for you, you can nit-pick word choice because language is an inherently limited and flawed means of communication with words having many different definitions and connotations. Go fuck yourself, you’re not adding anything constructive to the conversation, or giving me helpful tips on how to go about it. Which brings me to my next point.

2. Pointing Out Problems Without Coming Up With Solutions

We all do this. I do this. And it’s irritating and endlessly frustrating. Yes, money corrupts politics, yes, we spend too much money on fancy military toys and cut funding for domestic programs ranging from food-stamps to education, yes, there’s a giant wealth inequality gap of astronomical proportions, yes, we’re changing the climate and not in the good way like terraforming Mars or something. Yes, everything we eat is fucking poison and the good stuff is too expensive for most of us to buy. Yes, we live in a soul sucking society where we’re basically taught enough to be competent drones at an unfulfilling job testing dildos, or spitting in people’s fast food. But how the fuck do we fix it? I don’t know and apparently no one else does, but we all like the self satisfying feeling we get when bitch about stuff- like I’m doing now and it feels great! Though I have been suggesting armed rebellion and or secession for 20 of my 20 plus years.

3. Memetic Advice

You’ve seen ‘em, I’ve seen ‘em, we’ve all seen ‘em: memes! Funny memes, political memes, and the inspirational quote memes: “Go with the flow,” “Everyone’s beautiful,” “Something about Jesus” “Something about everything under the sun,” “Keep calm and don’t worry, everything’s gonna be smiles, rainbows, and unicorns!” First, don’t go with the flow. It works if you’re on the Lazy River Ride at a water park, but not so much when swimming in whirlpool, or a tornado. It’s a shitty metaphor. It has it’s time and place, but it’s not great life advice. There are plenty of times you should probably fight against the current especially when the current is a wave of Nazi zombies, or trying to change the world for instance. Second, everyone’s not beautiful. It’s not the most important thing in the world to be either. Some people are fucking trolls- straight up “Billy Goats Gruff” trolls and we all know it. And that’s okay, and it’s okay to not be attracted to everyone. It’s natural. I’m not saying you have to point it out to them, but you don’t have to think they’re the finest thing underneath God’s taint either. Third, shut the fuck up about Jesus and prayers and and how he loves all so damn much. But then again maybe he does, he just must really love helping actors win their awards more than he loves starving children, or disease ravaged populations. He must just work in mysterious, incomprehensibly cruel, inhumanly mysterious ways to achieve his grand plan for all of us. It just involves millions of people dying in natural disasters and from deadly pathogens he created in the first place. Thanks, G-Man! We’ll have to skip over “Something about everything under the sun,” since we don’t have all century, so lastly everything is not necessarily gonna be just dandy. Have cancer? There’s a good chance you will die. Kidnapped and locked in a trunk reading this on your iPhone? Call the police dipstick. Can’t pay the rent because of a hospital bill and lost your job because you had an accident which required you to go to the hospital? You might end up homeless, and it’s freezing outside in this hemisphere right now so you may well freeze to death as people tend to do without adequate shelter, if you don’t die of starvation, thirst, being shanked over the rights to a shopping cart full of cans. Life can suck, it can be brutal and no number of inspirational texts with a nice background image will change that.

4. Lists Of Everything You’ve Been Doing Wrong

“83 reasons you’ve been cooking pasta wrong your whole life!” “23 words you’ve been mispronouncing!” “162 mistakes you’ve made while touching yourself!” Have you seen these kind of articles? If not, good for you, they’re fucking annoying. My pasta comes out just fine. Words I’ve been mispronouncing? Oh no! Tell me internet, how can I correct my friends and sound more pretentious? And if you need an article to tell you how to touch yourself, well, maybe you do need that article.

5. Click Bait

You know, those headlines that start normal enough but cut off like the ending of “The Sopranos.” “A man was walking his dog when…” A local woman lost her glass eye when…” “And the this happened…” Yeah. Fuck those articles. They’re usually not that great anyway, which is why they have to lure us in those seductive and suggestive ellipses.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading. I hope you’ve enjoyed this rant as much as I enjoyed venting it out into text.

Only the Zombie Metaphor is Scary

Way creepier in real life

Way creepier in real life

Zombies are, in short, awesome entertainment and people have loved to be frightened by them and watch the human element develop under their pressure since George Romero’s original “Dawn of the Dead.”

The living dead just aren’t a serious threat, unless they’re in a massive swarm. But how would it even get to that point? In typical zombie lore you can only be infected by a bite and a zombie’s purpose in biting isn’t to methodically infect, but to eat you. So how many of the people bitten right off, especially if in a major artery, are going to get away and join the horde and not perish completely into zombie stomachs as food? Which also makes me wonder if zombies poop. I mean what do they do with all that human flesh they consume? Do they somehow retrieve nutrients and starve without it? If so, how, exactly do they extract nutrients from said flesh considering many an animate cadaver has internal organs -including parts of the digestive tract- falling out of them? Or sometimes they’re stuck, legless, missing their bottom half. What then?

Let’s say, for argument, everyone’s infected like in “The Walking Dead” and you turn when you die no matter what. This makes hordes a bit more likely and the biggest problem would be when it starts off with people not recognizing what they are until the zombie literally tells them by sinking its teeth deep into their neck. Also, I see trouble with regular folks like us, even when we see what’s really going on, being able to put down our own family and friends, except maybe a bitchy aunt, or that friend who’s never invited and shows up anyway. Also, if everyone’s infected, why does it take a bite to kill you? How does that virus work?

Now we have a hypothetical horde. Too bad the military, and lots of citizens, have enough fire power to lay an entire horde low without needing a headshot. With enough bullets and bombs those missing legs are going to be a big problem for any zombie’s mobility, at which point they’re just as dangerous as a crippled, rabid snapping turtle like Mitch McConnell. No big deal. Walk through the dismembered heard and put something though the surviving brains and we’re done. At worst it’s like a really bad flu season with more cannibalism, but not end of civilization type stuff reducing us to scavengers and roving biker gangs. Humans are way to good at killing things and have been since we first began making species extinct like possibly the mammoth – which is way harder to kill with spears than a zombie.

The actual scary part is the becoming a zombie. An unthinking murder machine. We lose who we are, our humanity. All of our thoughts and memories are gone, but we hobble onward to our next meal. It’s like alzheimer’s and rabies combined and we’re all probably more afraid of alzheimer’s than rabies because we all know someone, or know someone who knows someone, whose seen the slow and horrific deterioration of a loved one into a person who can’t remember their own name. We’re afraid of losing ourselves and our individuality and becoming part of an unthinking horde like we consider everybody who isn’t us in society. Zombies are just the flesh eating versions of the dreaded sheeple. No one wants to be a sheeple. So just imagine if mass, mindless conformity became a disease that could be spread through some kind of mass media infecting people en masse and making them obsessed with only the most basic, mindless things. For zombies it’s eating. For sheeple it’s a celebrity sex tape, or one of those crappy singing contest shows.

Feminism – About 78 Percent of a Penny for Your Thoughts?

IMG_0382

Feminism is a hot topic right now and it’s great that we as a society are finally talking about so much: GamerGate; #YesAllWomen; cat calling and street harassment; wage discrimination; weak and over sexualized female characters and the epidemic of sexual assault and rape. It’s not so great that it’s apparently a controversial topic.

I have a penis, I’m a male, and I identify as a male, and I’m a feminist because it’s only logical to be one. Here’s why: Are women people? Yes. Should people be treated equally? Yes. See? It’s that simple. Women should be paid the same amount of money for the same amount of work as men. Women should be able to walk down the street without being harassed and without fear of being raped. Women should also be able to play a video game and get to wear armor that actually covers the vital organ carrying parts of their body like male characters. Women should also be able to write about any of this without getting hate mail, death and rape threats- just like a man would be able to do. I’m going to post this online and I feel fairly safe and secure that no one will threaten me.

Let’s dig a little deeper. There are so called “feminazis” out there. But calling all feminists that is like calling all jellybeans black licorice flavored*. It’s just not true. Sure, there are some jelly beans out there that suck, but the vast majority of jelly beans are sweet and delicious. There are black licorice flavored jellybean types in all areas of life and many of them get elected to congress.

“Yeah, but now it’s not even okay to talk to, or flirt with, women!” Sure it is. Just do it normally like you would talk to any other person and if they are clearly feeling uneasy about you talking to them, bid them adieu, walk away and leave them alone. It’s not okay to shout obscenities at complete strangers, nor is it appropriate to touch them, follow them, or get mad at them for them for being mad at you for doing any of those things. Also, it’s worth noting that women, like all people, with have different levels of comfort and tolerance to everything on the spectrum from flirting to harassment. (Just to clarify, know the difference between talking, flirting, and harassment, because one of them is never okay.) If a women deems your advances as inappropriate, apologize for making them feel uncomfortable and move on. I tend to be a flirty person and have made my fair share of women uncomfortable. I didn’t mean to, but you know what I did? I apologized and stopped. On one occasion, the extent of my behavior was complementing a woman’s cooking and calling her cute. At one point she told me over text to “stahp.” However, I didn’t take this to mean “seriously, stop, you’re making me uncomfortable,” but as a more playful form of modesty (part of the problem may be it was in text and you loose a lot of meaning in that mode of communication). Eventually, I did get a serious message and did just that and apologized. And I was okay with that. Which brings me to another point: women, please tell us in a serious and straight forward manner the moment we make you feel uncomfortable because some of us will not know we’re doing it and think we’re doing nothing wrong. We don’t mean any harm. To stop acting a certain way, we have to know it’s not okay or appreciated. Some guys wont listen, but if they care about you and your friendship they will. If they don’t, or become angry, or even aggressive then don’t hesitate to get help and cut them out of your life. And also, guys, just because you don’t mean any harm doesn’t mean you aren’t doing any. BP didn’t mean any harm either, but they did. And it took them a long time to even admit they screwed up and even longer to fix the problem. Just try and have a calm dialogue and understand where the other party is coming from. Don’t be BP or that awful jellybean.

“Not all guys are like those guys!” Yeah, obviously. Most people know and acknowledge that- remember the black licorice jellybean analogy from before? Okay good. Don’t get upset, no one is saying you did anything wrong- unless of course, you did do one of those things then you are the unsavory jellybean from above and you should feel judged. Besides, when you say that you’re missing the point entirely. Kind of like it was the pre-Civil War era and you said “Not all white men are slave owners!” While true, it’s missing the point that there are slave owners and that the slaves had it a lot worse than non slaves, just like women today have a lot more horse excrement to put up with than men.

“What about men’s rights!?” What about them? The only time I’ve said anything like that I was in middle school, or high school, and I said it ironically because we men basically have all the rights and have at least had more throughout history. So, unless you’re joking and trying to make that exact point, shut the fuck up. And notice I said that back in my school days too, so if you do say it, and you are joking, make it point to let it be known as an ironic statement meant to comment about the inequality of the sexes in contemporary society.

“Boys will be boys, though.” Yes they will, but mostly because that’s what we as society teach them, but it’s not an excuse, or carte blanche, to abuse and harass women. There are biological differences between men and women and men tend to be more aggressive, there’s some sexual dimorphism between the sexes too, like men tend to have more robust build. But this doesn’t mean women can’t do the same things men do or that they aren’t physically capable of the same feats that men are. And these biological differences aren’t a reason to pay women less or treat them less than human. Gender roles are mostly arbitrary and set by a culture and it’s people. Obviously, men do not have the role of birthing children, or breast feeding. Those are the only two gender roles that are pretty solid outside of culture. So, if a boy wants to wear a dress, why not let him? If a girl wants to drink beer while shooting guns, read the Bible and deny climate change and evolution then run for congress, why not let her?

*Apologies if you are one of the few who enjoy black licorice flavored jellybeans. Just pretend it said some flavor you don’t like. Or if you enjoy all flavors, then fake jellybeans made of poop.

A Snake or a Gun

IMG_4550

I am tired of thinking and talking

There aren’t any more answers to be found

And I’m sick of just walking around

Confidences will simply always break,

Relationships wither, grapes in the sun

So just choose between a snake or a gun

Kill, or be killed by one or the other

Don’t trust your lover, don’t trust your brother

Tell what you’re willing for others to know

For when trust fails, your secrets they will show

There’s no good or bad, just alive or dead

For a snake will bite you within your bed

A gun will put a bullet through your head

Life tests the living, but it is no test

Now it’s time to put on my Sunday best

And to revel in this undying quest

The Future is a Thicket

The past ‘n’all my love a blasted ruin

City of the dead consumed by desert

Rebuilt again ‘n’again, what else ‘s’worth doin’

Sand foundations, falling always to dirt

The future, it is a thicket of thorns

Strang’ling each limb, only stillness is peace

Tearing, shredding my skin, my soul it scorns

Stillness is not life and life does not cease

With ev’ry step those teeth sink into me

Blood thirsty jaws gnaw’n’ at my flesh and bone

Flaying till there’s nothing, only debris

Escape costs blood, but death I can postpone

All things end even the thorny thicket

It’s not won, but endured, no gold’n ticket
